SLEMAN - Red and white flags, Garuda and UPN flew during the opening ceremony Pengenalan Kehidupan Kampus/PKK (introduction to the campus environment) UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta, Monday (14/8/2017). The three flags measuring approximately 6 x 4.5 meters were carried by three UPNVY jumpers, Air Sport Federation Indonesia (FASI) DIY and Lanud Adisucipto.

The third heroic action of the jumpers received a standing ovation from the 2,342 students who attended the central field of UPN Condong Catur Campus. The three flags were then submitted to the Rector of UPNVY, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sari Bahagiarti K, M.Sc., Vice Rector I, Dr. Mohamad Irhas Effendi, M.S and Vice Rector III, Dr.Ir.Singgih Saptono, M.T who attended the event.

Every year the parachute attraction becomes the regular agenda of welcoming new students. This year has been the first time the flag of Garuda Pancasila spread out in the sky by the jumpers, which was one of the embodiments of defending the State.

Interestingly, one of the jumpers was an alumni of UPNVY. Nugroho Budi Santoso who was a graduate of Management Department class of 1989 has been a jumper since in college. This jump has been the 400th  for Nugroho. For him, to be a jumper in the opening ceremony of new students on his campus almamater has been a routine agenda.

" I participate in the opening of new students almost every year. Not only for new students, but also for Menwa events, " said Nugroho.

The husband of Sri Dwi Yanti said his interest in cultivating the aerospace sport started from his senior solicitation in the Student Regiment (Menwa). Many students and alumni UPNVY joined FASI at that time. It was getting rounded his determination to cultivate the adrenaline a racing sport.

"Skydiving is one of the activities in Menwa. Not mandatory, but most of them come, some even become athletes, " he told to Info Campus.

The year of 1994 became a historic moment for Nugroho. In that year, he did the foray for the first time. Accompanied by a jumping master or trainer, he plunged with a static free fall technique of the Cesna type aircraft.

Static free fall is a parachute technique by hooking the parachute opening pin to the rope. The coach will pull the pin when the rope has already been attached, so that the parachute will open.

"When I dove  for the first time, I did not feel anything, just enjoyed the flight because it was also the first time for me going by the plane. When it came to the second plunge, it was scared to death. Supposing that the slaughtered did not come out, because it was so frightening, "said the father of Nursati Dwi Nugroho and Awan Nurjati Satria Nugroho.

The man born in Magelang, July 22, 1970 was told that he was able to use the technique of free fall when he plunged into the third time. In this technique, the parachutist himself is responsible for opening the parachute. He admitted that he was still afraid at the time, but the jumping masters always reminded him that the most important part of the jump was the motion automation.

"We fly at an altitude of 3000 - 3500 ft, and our time in the air is only 15 seconds. If something happens, the parachute will not expand or else, our time is only 15-20 seconds. There is no place to ask, "he said.

According to Nugroho, skydiving is a risky sport. This aerial exercise not only relies on physical health, but also mental one. Before becoming a jumper, he had to follow the psychotest and medical test. Even before jumping, the jumpers should check the blood pressure.

"In DIY, we cooperate with AAU for psycho test, while for medical test we cooperate with RS AAU. Similar to military standards, "he said.

Nugroho advised students who were interested in joining the parachute  to prepare  themselves physically and mentally. Parachuting is not only devoted to the Menwa Student Organization but is open to others who want to join it. However, in Menwa, the education of discipline has been also  taught just as in the rules of parachuting.
